Comparing the Stop the Thyroid Madness books
IF YOU WONDER ABOUT THE TWO STTM BOOKS….
First, know that there is excellent commonness to the two Stop the Thyroid Madness (STTM) books, even with their differences:
1) Both represent a change in the way thyroid disease is understood and treated in various ways.
2) Both are popular around the world by patients wanting the best understanding of how to get well!
3) Both have played a role in changing the way doctors treat.
But there are key differences! Here’s what will help you figure out which book you want, or both books. In fact, it’s more common for patients to get both by the look of the orders we’re seeing.
1) THE REVISED STOP THE THYROID MADNESS BOOK (also called STTM I (one)): this is the one on the left with all the people!
Humorous tidbit: that’s Janie in front–it ended up looking like she had too much blush on. lol. That’s her cousin to her left. The gal in orange didn’t realize she was very hypothyroid when this photo was taken! If you look at the back cover, totally different expressions on their faces, representing success!!
This is the first book! It’s unique from any other thyroid book on the market and different from the second book. i.e. it’s a compilation of reported thyroid patients experiences and wisdom from all over the world as compiled by activist Janie A. Bowthorpe, M.Ed. That makes it very different than opinion, which can be all over the map, and which you’ll see in a lot of other thyroid books.
This book is often called “The Bible of Thyroid Treatment”. i.e. it’s so full of details and solid experiences that patients refer to it over and over and over.
Because this book informs YOU as to what others have learned and done worldwide, it can help change what happens when you sit in that doctor’s office. i.e. you can now be active in your relationship with your doctor, and suggest what you want to be on and why, how to read that labwork, what else you need, etc. This helps YOU be your own best advocate. No more putting all your apples in the doctor’s cart if you want to get well!
This book has some humor in it. For example, take time to read the Glossary.
This book has some of what you see on the STTM website, but it also has details you will not see. For example, Chapter 6 is the best information anywhere on the use of HC for proven low cortisol. It also applies to over-the-counter Adrenal Cortex.
If you can only afford one book, this is it. To order it, go to the publishing company website–they usually ship within 48 hours of receiving the order, unlike Amazon which frequently has this on backorder and it can take awhile. Or…after reading the below, you can order BOTH of them here: https://laughinggrapepublishing.com/stop-thyroid-madness-books-revised-and-ii/
2) THE STOP THE THYROID MADNESS II BOOK: this is the white one on the right!
Humorous tidbit: Janie had that style of cover design in her mind from the beginning–simple, understated, white. But the paid cover designer just wasn’t doing it the way she envisioned–color, busy. She finally said Stop! and told him “Do this, do that”. He didn’t like it. She didn’t care!
This book was on Janie’s mind for a year: i.e. one that was totally written by medical practitioners and would “complement” the first book above! (No, it’s not a replacement. It’s a complement)
Overall, it’s purpose was two-fold: 1) To bring more details about certain subjects that only trained practitioners could bring to the fold of informed thyroid patients 2) To send a STRONG message to other practitioners of “Hey, even some of your colleagues share similar wisdom to thyroid patients!! Listen to them!”
Janie had to carefully choose these professionals. She did so by looking closely as to who patients were reporting as more informed than other doctors and/or more open-minded and/or willing to LISTEN to their patients wisdom. That was extremely important. Are they all perfect? No, but at least they got it about the subject they wrote about!
She then had to find a way to contact each one, which wasn’t easy, and explain her vision. These are the ones who heartily agreed to write a chapter! And each have great value in their own ways.
P.S. Janie found out the hard way that a few of the practitioners didn’t understand sentence or paragraph structure or how to spell (like to proverbial problem of reading a doctor’s handwriting. lol). So though a great deal of proofreading created changes, there may still be a spelling error or something related which were not caught before the book went to press, and both the authors and we are sorry for that, if so. But the bottom line is: the information from ALL of them is informative, worthy and fabulous. They are:
David Brownstein, MD; James Yang, MD, MPH; Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA; Laura R Stone MD; Carla Heiser, MS RD LD; Yusuf (JP) Saleeby, MD; Jeffrey Dach, MD; Geoffrey T. Bouc, MD; William D. Trumbower, MD; Nguyen D. Phan, MD; Paula Luber, MD; Philip L. Roberts, MD; Paige Adams FNP, B-C; Benjamin Lynch, ND; ena D. Edwards, MD, FAARM, FICT; plus Sahar Swidan, PharmD.
