More good info on Canada’s “Thyroid” by Erfa

erfathyroidJust had a good conversation with Dr. Henri Knafo, the Director of Medical Affairs at Erfa Canada, Inc.

On my post below from yesterday, you will see hopeful information on getting this excellent Canadian desiccated thyroid. And below is more information you have been asking for as patients who know the efficacy of desiccated thyroid.

Erfa’s “Thyroid” comes in three strengths: 30 mg, 60 mg, and 125 mg.  Amounts you can order, and costs, are as follows:

30mg             500 tablets  $52.00 US;    100 tablets $18.00 US

60mg             500 tablets  $70.00 US;    100 tablets   $39.00 US

125mg          500 tablets  $100.00 US;   100 tablets  $ 50.00  US

Erfa will charge a 10$ handling fee (for first time users) and shipping is around $20 US.  Knafo states the prices are equivalent to Armour.

Erfa’s Thyroid has been in production for 30 years and they have 5000 Canadian patients on it.

Erfa’s Thyroid is approved by Health Canada (their equivalent to FDA).  Erfa spoke to the FDA, and in order for their desiccated thyroid to cross the US border, you have to fill out and sign the FDA patient study form which is mentioned below.

Erfa’s Thyroid is made in Europe with the raw materials, and they bought an excess of it. So there will be no problem getting it and they expect no shortages the rest of the year.

One canadian pharmacy you can use (and is not associated with Erfa) is the Canada Pharmacy Online.

Good news! You can get good desiccated thyroid from Canada.

NOTE: when this blog post was written in 2009, it was good news to mention the Canadian brand of NDT, made by the company called Erfa. But sadly beginning in 2014, it seemed to change in a negative way, as reported by numerous patients, even if some still used it. Complaints about symptoms returning fell on deaf ears. There have also been shortages.

Unfortunately, patients who want to switch to desiccated thyroid from T4-only meds like Synthroid et al, or those already on desiccated thyroid who want to fill their next prescription, are going to find it difficult. There are widespread shortages in desiccated thyroid like Armour, Naturethroid and Westhroid. (see my posts below).

But there’s good news, and it comes in the form of “Thyroid”  by Erfa.

Erfa’s “Thyroid”  is an excellent natural desiccated thyroid product according to the experience of patients who use it. It contains:

  • Dried Thyroid
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Cornstarch
  • Talc
  • Sugar

**Note the “sugar”. Patients also report they are able to do this brand of medication sublingually! That is good news.

The Erfa website states you can obtain their desiccated thyroid medication outside of Canada via a special access program and follow their steps:

For patients outside Canada and the US:

1. Get a prescription from your local doctor (mention hypothyroidism on it).
2. Your doctor should fill in this simple document (not required for the UK)
3. Fax or e-mail us the documents at 1-514-931-7330 or info@ERFA.net

For patients in the US:

1. get a valid prescription of Thyroid from your local doctor
2. your doctor has to fill FDA form 1572 (e-mail us a request at info@ERFA.net
3. Fax or e-mail us the documents at 1-514-931-7330 or info@ERFA.net

Thank you Erfa from Stop the Thyroid Madness and thyroid patients all over the world who KNOW what a superior treatment desiccated thyroid really is!

Thyroid Tidbit: FLUORIDE in our water is poison to our thyroids

waterrunning

Even 1 1/2 years ago, over 2000 professionals from a variety of disciplines called the US Congress to end Fluoridation of water, citing it’s toxicity and the deception of putting it in our water. You can read their call to action here.

The importance of this call lies in each of us with thyroid disease, since fluoride is a KNOWN inhibitor of our thyroid function.

As of Feb. 9th, 2009, the Courier Post Online of South Jersey has an excellent article on the problem of our extreme exposure to fluoride.  This article cites the following facts:

1) 53 US cities rejected fluoridation during our last November election
2) Ingested fluoride can damage kidney patients, bones, the thyroid gland, high water drinkers, and children’s teeth
3) Studies linking fluoride to cancer and lowered IQ are plausible.
4) In 2007, the British Medical Journal indicated that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical.
5) Health Canada says the government should cut the recommended amount in drinking water, encourage the use of low-fluoride toothpaste by children and have makers of infant formula reduce levels.

I personally made a point to stop using any toothpaste with Fluoride a few years ago.  I also supplement with iodine, since fluoride displaces iodine levels. Sadly, I still love iced tea, which contains fluoride.  But YOU can avoid more fluoride exposure by finding a way to get off anti-depressants and osteoporosis medications which contain fluoride, and that is especially possible when you are optimal with Armour desiccated thyroid in presence of strong adrenals or optimal cortisol supplementation.

What is going on with the Texas Medical Board?? Potentially worrisome.

This 2008 blog post was updated in 2015 here: //www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/2015/07/28/medical-boards-and-the-tsh-how-they-fail-thyroid-patients-worldwide/   Enjoy!!

**************

I was informed today that a very popular and well-liked doctor in Texas, who treats many hypothyroid patients, was disciplined recently.  And for what?  Under the column titled NONTHERAPEUTIC PRESCRIBING, it states:  The action was based on Dr. Launius’ prescribing Adipex, Adderal and Armour Thyroid to patients when such medications were not indicated. www.tmb.state.tx.us/news/press/2008/101608a.php

Adipex and Adderol are both central nervous system stimulants, and I can’t comment one way or the other. But the mention of Armour thyroid as “not indicated” is potentially worrisome, especially with similar disciplinary actions brought upon well-liked and wise doctors like Peatfield and Skinner of the UK, Derry of Canada, and  Springer in the US–all who dared to make obvious symptoms more important than ink spots on a piece of paper.

Take Kymm, a 45 year old woman.  She has manifested hypothyroid symptoms for 15 years since the birth of her daughter.  Yet during those entire 15 years, her TSH lab result has been completely “normal”…i.e. hypothyroidism has never been “indicated” based on the typical and widespread gold standard of diagnosis: the TSH.  But she has never, ever been normal with 15 years of easy weight gain, chronic depression, thinning hair, rising cholesterol, and other clear hypothyroid symptoms. And she has in fact started on Armour…and is soaring.

Kymm is not an oddity.  Thyroid patients on internet groups report going years with a normal TSH, no diagnosis, yet clear symptoms which are ignored by their TSH-obsessed doctors.   So their doctors may have avoided disciplinary action, but did they truly practise the art and science of healing??

Dumb as boards; blind as bats

I use those phrases often. I can’t help it. Because it’s exactly what doctors are when it comes to thyroid treatment. It’s APPALLING.

Yesterday, I had the first of two book signings. It was announced in the paper, and I wasn’t sure what the turnout would be. I shouldn’t have wondered. It was a great turnout. People are GETTING IT that there is SOMETHING WRONG with their treatment. Around me stood several women, all still on T4 (Synthroid, Levoxyl, et al), and ALL suffering. All but one woman had weight problems. Several had rising cholesterol. Some admitted to being on anti-depressants. Some obviously had adrenal fatigue. And ALL were being told by their doctors that their thyroid treatment was now “normal”. Where can I go beat my head against the wall?????? They were eager to get the book and the knowledge it contained to change their lives!

So far, the book has been sent to Norway, Iceland, Belgium, UK, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Australia and Canada, besides all over the US. The STTM website started the wheel to turn, and the book can only move it faster. And add it to other thyroid books which had begun to mention the truth (Broda Barnes being the first) as well as other groups and websites—we’ll eventually knock some SENSE and SIGHT in doctors, don’t you think?

The Stop the Thyroid Madness book, the bible of correct thyroid and adrenal treatment, by patients for patients, can be ordered here.

P.S. I live near one town which serves a population of nearly 35,000 people, and near another of over 4000 people, and there are plenty of doctors around here. Yet, there is not ONE doctor in this area that “gets it”. I sympathize with YOU if you are in the same boat.
