And here are expiration dates given by patients of the changed tablets… One problem is that some expiration dates could fit the former good tablets. These seem to come from the pharmacy, not Acella, but we’re guessing.

My husband has been on NDT for the better part of his adult life. Years ago he was on Armour and did great. He changed Dr. who put him on Synthroid and his #s were never as good as when on Armour. He also started having some kidney function decline, high BP and other issues while on Synthroid. After much hunting, I found a Dr. in our area that would prescribe NDT. Starting 5 years ago he was on Naturethroid, then NP when Naturethroid wasn’t working and hard to get. Then late last year he switched to Armour because it was the last one that we hoped would work. He had bloodwork 2 weeks ago and saw his Dr. this past Monday. His numbers were the best they’ve been in years. His Dr. did increase his Armour dose to 135mg…he was on 120mg but his T3 still could stand a little tweeking, This has been quite a journey and an expensive one, since our insurance will not pay for NDT. The Armour 120mg runs $147.00 for 90 and the 15mg is $60. for 90. We pay out of pocket since we are convinced it is the best for him.

No lot#, exp 10/09/2020, filled at Giant Pharmacy in Annapolis, MD on 10/11/19. First refill of nasty cat pee pills. Usual list of hypo symptoms. These were for my husband, who had a thyroidectomy, so the physical/mental repercussions have been huge.
JANIE-NEW LOT # NDC 42192032901, exp 10/2020, lot# M329H19-2 – MAYBE. When I called to get the lot#, because it is not on the bottle, first I was told “we don’t have that” and then I was told “maybe” this is the lot#! So I advise everyone to GET THE LOT # when you pick up your RX (if you pick up in person). Ridiculous. I said, “so if I need to report a life-threatening issue with a medication, are you telling me you have no way of linking my specific RX# with the lot# it was filled with??? What if there is a recall?? Exactly how am I supposed to know if my RX is affected?”

Received the new NP as of October. Felt ok in November. Started going down hill in December on the new stuff. Pharmacy didn’t have lot numbers except for last refill which looked same as October – December. NDC 42192-0330-01, lot M330H 19-3 Exp 01/2021 Found enough “old†NP to switch back for a few weeks. I was doing so well on the old NP. Devistated that they changed it. My body temp dropped on the new NP: Ive been irritable and having dark thoughts, fatigue, extremely forgetful to the point I was worried about dementia.
Last Rx was filled November 2019 was Acella NP Thyroid “older” 90mg tablets (no cat urine smell) however labs are not optimal (high range of TSH, 3.7 of range 0.45- 4.5) and T4 is low (5.5 of range 4.5 – 12.0).
Latest Rx for Acella NP Thyroid “Newer” 90mg tablets dated 1/24/20 has the cat urine smell tablets. I have expiration date of 1/23/2021 but no lot number. Filled at Publix Pharmacy Hollywood FL 33020. Too soon to tell the effects.
Different Smell and look with the last mail order which was in late Sept 2019. I had to check markings to make sure it was Acella NP Thyroid I thought they had sent wrong Rx . Problems including palpitations soon followed and labs show low.

Express Scripts Mail Order
NEW LOT # JANIE – M329E19-2 (30mg) filled on 12/1/19 at Walgreens in Sunset Beach, NC. I take five 30mg tablets per day (150mg). It’s important to note there was a mix of speckled and un-speckled tablets in this bottle. My NDT has always been off-white and smelled a bit like bacon to me, but they clearly changed to a grayish, speckled color with a strong, disgusting ammonia odor like cat pee. In November, 2018, my frees were optimal and I was symptom free. By April 2019, my muscles and joints were aching all the time, my hair was falling out, and my FT3 started pooling. By August 2019, afternoon fatigue was so severe, I almost fell asleep driving one day! By December 2019, my frees were very low and my symptoms were severely affecting my life, so I decided to try Armour Thyroid. I started Armour the last week in December 2019, and within 5 days, all the aches were gone. I’m working my way back to optimal frees and can’t wait for my energy to return and life to get back to normal.
I have a twist to add to the issue that I fear may have affected others as it did me. I too recently started on NP Thyroid when I could no longer obtain Nature-Throid, and in July – November I was so sick I ended up in the ER (in Aug.) for dehydration. I was extremely fatigued, sore throat, intestinal issues, brain fog, etc. The culprit(s)? I went back to the doctor over a month after ER since I still felt so horrible, for a blood test/antibody titer, and it turns out I had recently had mono twice, infected sequentially by the two viruses that cause it: cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr. The first doesn’t usually cause intestinal issues but in rare instances, that complication can develop. Everyone has been asking me how I caught mono, especially twice in a row, since it’s “the kissing disease” and I’m married but my husband was never sick. Could this is be the missing link? I also had palpitations and a heart rate so high I couldn’t sleep at night. Needless to say I’ve stopped taking it and am much better. Sorry no lot #’s as I threw out the bottles back in Sept. I’m so sorry to hear that others are suffering as I did… I would suggest getting tested. Now that I’ve read everyone’s complaints here and elsewhere I will report to the FDA.
Hi. Sorry you had to go through that. By the way, you probably didn’t “catch” mono. Instead, the changed NP may have caused such a bad return of hypothyroidism that you “reactivated” the dormant virus that was already in you. They state that a high percentage of adults already have that virus lying dormant/silent in us, whether we had active mono as a teenager or not. And stress of any kind can reactivate it.
I never had mono as a teenager or young adult, but did date a boy ‘way back when’ that got it. I didn’t get sick from him, but clearly acquired it. Because years later while still on Synthroid and very hypo, saw it reactivate.
Interesting… A couple of issues stand out, though. I’d tested negative for cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the past when giving blood, and was negative at that time, but my results, after the illness, are positive now. And, my experience was that of hyper-, not hypoactive thyroid — my racing heart is one symptom. Plus, since mono is transmitted via ingestion (saliva, shared utensils), perhaps the batch of medication was contaminated. This is obviously all speculation, but something just doesn’t sit right with me about it all… I did report to the FDA.
CMV is another virus that can reactivate during times of low immunity.
1. The size of the NP Thyroid has changed. And the taste is horrible! It taste rotten. Leaves a bad after taste. My hypo symptoms are returning and labs were not as good as last year.

Lot m329h19-1 smells differently from previous np . I received 2 refills that smelled from capsule pharmacy in nyc . I returned them . Went back to duane reade since I hadn’t had a problem with their np and this bottle came from them
I switched from levothyroxin to np thyroid about 4 years ago and all was well until about a year ago. My fingernails began peeling and now have just started splitting. Also my hair has become wispy (was always quite thick) and very sparse. After reading all the awful experiences by people on np thyroid and other dessicated versions, I have stopped taking everything except Iodine Edge and Selenium. I intend to start taking Thyroid Edge along with those two. A week after I stopped the np thyroid, my mental and physical energy have begun ramping up. Yea! Thank you for this site and the information!.
Just opened my NP thyroid from Express Scripts, it smells like cat piss and it is burning my throat. Called Express Scripts and they said that the lot # is M328G-193A from Acella Pharmaceuticals. It’s Saturday so I can’t call them but their number is 800-541-4802. I asked Express Scripts if they have tested the medicine all I got was they rely on the manufacturer and they are claiming that since it is a natural product it can smell.. Well I have taken natural thyroid for years like 10 years and NEVER has anything smelled this bad ever. I don’t feel very good since taking it. Where do we go from here? I guess I need to call the CDC? FDA? What recourse do we have? How dare these companies do this to us and get away with it.
Received a new batch of mail order CVS NP 60s Saturday – tried one and immediately noticed the taste then the horrible smell stuck to my fingers. Compared to “good” pill and saw clearly the mottled dark patches on ‘new’ ones. That night I got very dizzy and nauseous and felt extremely drugged and sick. Called Acella today and front line rep claimed no change. I said BS she said only change is different source for the porcine – now sourced from europe instead of US. Got through to David eventually who took my info, gave me a case number, asked if I could get a lot number, said hell send a package for me to return some pills but also claims that the new source has been thoroughly vetted and is FDA approved so doesn’t think the pills will change back…..
CVS says they can’t give lot numbers for mail order RX b/c they come in giant bottles of 1000s so they can’t trace them……

Rachel, don’t hold your breath! Many many here have spoken to “David†at Acella, sent back some pills and get no further. The company is doing nothing besides what you just experienced. Sad!
I thought I was doing ok on the new NP, but now my body temp is low and I have increased pains. Just picked up some compounded T3 and will (with my Docs blessing) play around with this to see what level will get my temp and energy back up!
Agree with Jeanne. A lot of people reached out & spoke with “David†in Atlanta and “Steve†in Massachusetts, but to no avail. They may have took
some notes/sent out some replacement pills pretending to care, but they ended up being the same crappy ones. Would suggest moving on at this point (as I & many others have) until all these thyroid medicine manufacturers get it together and actually fix the problems. They will have no choice but to eventually (or go out of business) when they lose enough money. I’m on compounded porcine + t3 and feeling pretty decent after the NP nightmare
So what I posted were apparently not lot numbers. I went to the pharmacy and asked what the lot was. They couldn’t tell me for sure but said it was one of these three bottles.

I started my rx in May of 2019 pill number 330….My side effects are sever affecting my every day life, depression, anxiety, joint and muscle pain throughout my entire body, weight gain on a low calorie diet. This drug is dangerous ! I’m 54 and was diagnosed with hashimoto’s at 44 and this is worst I have ever felt. I feel weak and 100 years old. I dont know If these affect will ever go away. I’ve been off the drug for 3 weeks and no change. Be careful.

They don’t she’ll awful, but 3 hours after taking them, the cat pee that is still in my mouth.
I will be calling the pharmacy and Acella today. If necessary, I will call my Dr for a different scrip. Thankful r,I have about 10 days remaining from my last scrip.
I like others have had trouble since my Sept. refill. none are speckled but the last batch i got did not smell at all and those did not work and caused my blood pressure to go sky high so I stopped using them. Costco replaced them with new 1 grain over my 1/2 grains that I take 2 times a day but that stuff also did not work. The only NP that worked for me was the stuff that smelled bad. Called Acella and they wanted my old stuff back but never sent anything to me. Just like RLC labs they are not to be trusted either nor do I think they care. I am surprised no one has started a class action lawsuit against these manufacturers and I think that’s the only to fix this. A good ambulance chaser lawyer that wants to make a name for themselves would get things rolling pretty quickly.
I gave my old bottle to the pharmacy to mail to Acella as they requested, so I don’t have the lot #. I do have the lot # on the new bottle they sent me: Lot M330H19-4 Exp 01/2021 . I do not intend to take it as I am still hurting from the 16 days I took out of the bottle I refilled in early Sept and then returned. The pills in the new bottle they sent look just like the pills in the bottle I returned. They don’t have any smell and I haven’t had the courage to taste them. I just want to feel like my self again and stop hurting!!!

Ordered from the US but I live in the UK.
I contacted Acella by phone (left message) and by email a couple of weeks ago. In the last few days I have received phone calls from two people at Acella. One was from customer service and said he would send my pharmacy a new bottle of NP 60’s and that I should return the old bottle to the pharmacy when the new comes in. The pharmacy will be instructed to send the old bottle to Acella. He said he would refer my complaint to the medical department. The next day I received a call from someone in medical. This man asked me a lot of questions (like what other meds was I on — I told him none). I am not sure if I will be brave enough to take the new bottle they send since I am still feeling terrible from taking two weeks of the first bottle. All my muscles and joints hurt. This is what I feel like when I am getting too little thyroid med. It is also what I feel like when I inadvertently eat something with red 40 dye. I asked if there was red 40 in the new pills and they said “No.” I asked where it came from and they said “Western Europe.” They said their contract doesn’t allow them to say what country. I am very upset. I was fit and healthy at 70 (exercising and eating a very healthy diet). I had thyroid surgery (half removed) at age 24 for graves so I have a lot of experience with the ups and downs of the thyroid meds. I have started on a compounded prescription ($179/mo because it involves two different strengths). This is a stop gap while I figure out what to do. I am still feeling terrible after a week on the compounded. The acella really did a job on me.
Re Accella
1. I’ve been getting the same NP Thyroid, 60mg, from the same pharmacy for over 3 years. Now that I’m looking closely, I can see the pill is speckled and upon getting close to sniff it has a decided cat pee smell. But the tip-off was this: I’ve been ridiculously healthy for nearly two years, tons of energy, able to walk 5 miles a day. Then there were extra demands on me physically, and in the middle of that suddenly, within one hour I was down, zero energy, dizzy and tingly like in the bad old days. I talked with my pharmacist and she told me that the new bottle from which she gives me my monthly prescription started in September, so I’d been taking bad NDT for about eight weeks and my system finally gave out. I’ve had to cancel gigs and may not be able to travel to see my family for the holiday.

Call around to different pharmacies where you live and see if any of them still have the pre speckled tablets in stock. Hoping you can get back on track before the US holiday next week.
Just talked with Steve in the medical information department at Acella, 978-435-6950, as he had called me as a result of my contacting them. He asked plenty of pertinent questions so it seems they’re taking this seriously. Within a couple days of stopping taking them I began to feel better, and each day since then I’ve improved. I just took a 2-mile walk and so far so good. I’m not on any medication at all.
People have been doing what you’re doing for a couple of months now. And nothing has changed.

Picked up Rx at Walgreens in South Lyon, Michigan on 9/9/19. One bottle of 30mg and 1 bottle of 15mg. The 30mg smells like cat pee, but I swallow fast with water so I don’t notice a taste. It has a 329 on it and seems to look like the old form. It’s more yellow, shorter and no specks. The 15mg has no odor at all and has a 327 on it. I have been suffering from tight throat, paranoia, anxiety and no energy worse than ever since September. I have been taking NP for a year and a half and it never has made my levels optimal. Never been on any other thyroid medication before.
I just picked up a refill 11/07/2019. The first time taking it I had flu like symptoms and I thought I was getting sick. Each day after this it has gotten worse with the addition of feeling “weepy†and I had a panic attack last night at the gym!!! This has never happened. The appearance and smell consistent with what’s being described. I am calling pharmacy now—however I’m not sure what to ask for. What is working for you all. Oh and I also get an itchy throat about 20 minutes after
taking this.

China bought the Largest U.S. pork producer, Smithfield about 4 or 5 yrs. ago! Maybe we are getting pork parts for drugs from them. It sounds to me like the glands are rotten when they get to the Rx manufacturer! It could explain the smell and sick feeling.
Changed NP tablets – 1.5 GR, visual changes consistent with post, horrid smell and taste that was apparent the first tablet. Symptoms have come back extremely quickly. Expiration – 11/1/20. Lot M331G19-3 Walgreens, Solon Ohio

I picked up a bottle on 10/3/19 at my local Walgreen’s that resembled the old good Acella with no smell. Thought everything was back to normal. I picked up this month’s refill and the smell is back!

1. New NP Thyroid pills smell like toxic insecticide or paint thinner, taste awful (I take them sublingually), and have a purple gray speckled hue next to old form of the medication. I also experienced sudden swings from feeling hyper to hypo after taking them (I take two separate doses per day.)
2. I contacted the pharmacy that filled the prescription and they informed me of the following Lot Numbers: M329C19-1 exp. 2/28/2021 and M327F19-2 exp. 11/30/2020

I’m noticing return of hypo symptoms such as fatigue, hair falling out, cold all the time, brain fog. Couldn’t figure out what the heck was going on so I started researching it and came upon the post of the bad batches of np thyroid… my lot number is M330G-19-3 unknown expiration purchased at Walmart pharmacy Duncan Oklahoma. What do we do now? Ugh how can we get a good batch?

Stopped taking after 3 days due to the taste: insecticide or cat urine as others have reported. Pills have the speckled appearance. I did not notice this taste with the previous prescription that was filled 7/15/19. The pharmacy doesn’t have the lot number for it.
Please add Lot M331G19-4 to the list of NP Thyroid that causes severe gut burn, bloating and burping.
I have been taking these since 9-13-2019, and did not have an issue till this past Saturday, 10-26. I woke up in the night feeling like I was having a heart attack. My DH took me to the ER where I was worked up for an infarction. The results came back negative, and the ER doc discussed reflux. We talked about my history with omeprazole, and he was shocked that past doctors had kept me on it for years without break.
Thanks to the patient collective wisdom here at STTM, I knew it was the new Rx of Acella’s NP Thyroid I’ve been taking for the last three weeks. I thought I was in the clear with my cat-pissy bottle, but not so.
I did call ExpresScrips, who filled out a Med Watch Report, and their supervisor called Acella with me. We spoke with David M., who intoned the mantra of ‘nothing has changed’. Acella will be sending me a new bottle, hopefully from a different lot, and will have their medical officer call me. We shall see how it goes.
I did find a pre-change bottle of 2 grains in my cupboard, and will be cutting some in half to equal 3 grains daily until I get the new batch, or go Thai.
I did call American Laboratory last week, and spoke with their Marketing Director. I asked why they no longer offer desiccated porcine thyroid powder, and was told that they could only speak with someone who has a manufacturer’s FDA number. There is info about American Lab’s FDA documentation on their products, and it can be requested under the Freedom of Information Act, however there is a charge for the info, unless it’s requested by a 503(c) organization.If STTM is a 503(c), it would be totally worth looking into a FOIA on American Laboratory in Omaha, NE.
Doc upped my NP dose to 90 & I picked up the script today & there are 12 beige (old style) & 18 grey (new or bad batch?) in my bottle. I will try to upload the pic’s to Facebook. If you smell the grey pills up close they most definitely smell like cat pee. I asked the pharmacist for the original bottle & saw the different pills & showed him the different colors & asked if they mixed batched together. He stated he did not think so, but he only worked 1 day a week (Sat) & I should come back Monday to talk to the main pharmacist.

I’m in Germany and just received an original Acella bottle of 100 120mg tablets, lot M328F19-3, expiration date 11/2020. I noticed they lacked the sweet, characteristic smell of NDT right away. They “behaved” different under the tongue; took ages to dissolve. I just paid 275€ for those; I wish I had consulted the internet before ordering them. I didn’t, because I had hoped that FINALLY, Acella was reliable.

I’m not taking these. Whenever Armour or Erfa looked like this, spotty and grey, it ended badly.
I think I’ll give switching over to synthetic T4+T3 another go. I’ve had it. I’m SO done. I can’t be worrying about this sh*t every couple of months.

7. Unlike some of the commenters below, whose pharmacies are concerned about the quality of the NDT, my pharmacy will accept NO responsibility for a bad product. If I choose to buy it, then tough; it’s my problem. They suggested I contact the manufacturer if I have a problem.
8. Instead of 1 tablet per day, I am trying an extra half to one whole tablet, to see if I get any thyroid benefit at all.

3. Contained 22 pills with the darker color, thicker size, with speckles and less distinct edges/lettering on pills
4. The remaining 8 pills looked like they came from the “good” batches
5. The pharmacist told me they were all from the same lot number, but I wonder if they had 8 pills left from a good batch, then ordered more pills that were from a bad batch, and used those to complete my prescription. I knew that they had to order more pills, so I think that’s what they did.
6. I will NOT be taking the pills from the bad batch. And they won’t be giving me a refund.

When I picked up my prescription these were mixed in with some from an older bottle the pharmacy had (good batch) I talked with the pharmacist and she too noticed the difference when she opened the new bottle to finish filling my prescription. She was unaware that there was a change in the med. She allowed me to take a picture of the lot number and other information that I provided.
The pills smell like cat urine, are bigger, darker in color and spotted. They look and smell nothing at all like the NP pills I have taken for the last year. Thankfully I found out about the change in the pills and have not put any of these in my mouth.

FYI – FDA did shut down two brands of NDT in 2008-2009, they were considered generic just like Acella NP was for a while. From Time Caps and Major Pharmaceutical, I spoke to two reps of those companies back then trying to get a straight answer. They both were great thyroid meds in a time when Armour became unavailable. FDA changed Armour, it came back different and less effective.

I see number 330 on my pills, but don’t know what the other letters and numbers are on the list. No expiration date. 60 mcg. I’m starting to feel sick but my pills look like original ones and only smell as bad as they used to. Not sure what’s going on.
All NP 60’s say 330 on one side, AP on the other. Date code is on the origional bottle that the pharm gets it in. If its in their bottle you wont know unless asking at time of pick up.
Funny you should say that. My last ones are not in the bad group and is the old ones. I noticed after a few weeks on them I started to feel bad and my hair started to fall out and other things. Never had this in all the years I have been on thyroid pills, 30 years. Doctor said I was taking too much and cut me back to 120 from 135. I still feel bad. I am going to take a chance and take the new ones next week.
There seem to be three types of NP Thyroid pills from my experience:
1) tan and sweet tasting (old one). However, I received a very bad batch in June of 60 mg pills that look exactly like the original ones.
2) White pills with no smell
3) speckled darker pills that smell
From my experience they are all bad and will make you sick. I gave up and moved on to expensive compounded NDT powder for the last 3 weeks. I am hoping it works. Otherwise, I will go to synthetics.
My compounding pharmacy tells me they are unable to get the porcine to compound my medication. They are telling me it has been recalled.
Several compounding pharmacies have been been getting it. So not sure why thy would say that to you.
I just called two other pharmacies, one in Tucson, AZ and one in Albuquerque, NM. Both said they have the porcine powder and are compounding NDT. The NM pharmacy said they did have problems getting the powder at one point. My regular pharmacy is still saying that they can’t get it because of the “recall”. Honestly I am not sure I can trust the compounded NDT anymore, because it may be that the porcine powder is the issue and not the way it is formulated.
Mara I believe you I think they had enough stock but will see when they need to replenish thier supply. When I was looking for compounded this spring everyone in my state could not get it. So something is up for sure.
Ellen the FDA they don’t understand why people aren’t reporting it either.I for one have and had a very long conversation with him. I said people are afraid you will pull all ndt off the market.The response was not true we would never pull a medicine that benefits people and take away their options to be well ,no matter if it is natural source or synthetic.But they take this very seriously when people start having adverse reaction to it then they will investigate what has gone wrong but not many people are reporting it just going to groups and stating the bad effects they are having. We cannot sit back and hope accella fixes it because this could happen again.I for one want a answer because of how sick I am from this. The person at the FDA told if they go in and find nothing wrong the just walk away and leave it Alone.I feel I did the right thing and implore you to do the same they are not our enemy.He told me the more filed complaints they get the faster they investigate. The medicine is already comprised anyway so we have nothing to lose maybe a better chance to get quality np again.

Lot number M330G 19-4…exp date ?…I went to pick up my September script at Walgreens. After explaining the situation on the NP pill problems lately to the pharmacist , he opened the new bottle and we compared a pill in it to one of the old “good” ones I had brought with me. He sniffed the new pills in the bottle 3 times, and twice said with furrowed brow, ” they have a smell like dirty socks”. We compared the size and color to my old pill and the new script pills were larger which he noticed right away, he also noticed and commented on the color (brown speckled) where as my old pill was more of a cream color. I refused that script. He didn’t blame me, said He wouldn’t have taken it either.

I have been experiencing radiant chest pain (a dire hypo symptom for me) at bedtime. I take my 60mg NP at 5am every day. Started a new (tainted) bottle on Monday morning, chest pain started Tuesday night. So scared. I am nursing a 4.5mo old and have three other children. I have a message in to my doc about labs or sick visit. Waiting to hear back. My labs were so good on this Rx.
I called my pharmacy and spoke to a very helpful pharmacist to get the Lot/Expiration data. He also submitted a report to the FDA on my behalf. They may call me “within 5-7 days†to request my pills for a sample.

It’s a risk, yes, since NDT is not an officially approved drug. All we can do is hope that they will not stop all NDT altogether.
It is not a good idea to call FDA. What do you think FDA will do? They shut down the Acella’s production of NDT for ever, and maybe even production of all NDTs. If each of us calls and writes Acella then I’m sure Acella would take a closer look on what happened to their NDT. A compliant to the FDA maybe take the last chance for Acella to correct its mistakes… and we all do lose our last chance to get a good working NDT.
I understand where you are with this. I would think they would tell them to correct their mistakes if Acella does get evaluated by them. I would think it would take more than 1 complaint to cause a big problem. Hopefully I am right!
Understanding your arguments – but, for example, what about children taking this medication and the risk to harm their young more vulnerable bodies forever?

We can not let companies use our fears to do whatever they like to do – mainly to earn more money.

As far as I understand it doesn’t concern the basic porcine powder, because this is tested by the FDA, isn’t it?
It concerns the product NP Thyroid, meaning the fillers, coating a.s.o.
And the other companies that did never tell anyone, what they changed – they still exist and sell their products.
If the NP is as bad as everyone says it is, the risk of losing it through a referral to the FDA is no big threat. It is largely unusable no loss if production shuts down. But if the FDA persuades them to take it seriously and fix the problems we may get back a usable product,

Dry, itchy skin. Cycle messed up. Moody. Not sleeping. Depressed.
These tablets look a lot like the normal ones but are lighter in color. I had an allergic reaction to them with itching, hives and swelling throat and, other than sulfa drugs, the only thing I’ve ever had an allergic reaction to is nickel. I am very much non-allergic normally.

Went to pharmacy to pick up my prescription for Acella NP Thyroid, The pharmacist let me look and smell them before purchasing. The tablets were darker and speckled and had a chemical smell. Lot No. M330G19-3. I refused these tablets.
I brought one of my tablets from home to compare so the pharmacist could see the difference.
She found another bottle of NP Thyroid and we looked at the tablets and they look the same as what I am taking now and did not have a chemical odor. I took those. The Lot No. M330C19-4; Exp. 9/20. I am hopeful that these are the good ones.
Went to the pharmacy today to pick up my prescription for NP Thyroid 60 mg. After explaining what has been reported here, she let me look at and smell the pills before I purchased them. Sure enough they were darker and speckled with a chemical odor. I brought one of my good tablets to compare so she could see the difference. The tainted Lot No. is M330G19-3. I refused those tablets. I asked her to check if they had any others in stock. She found one bottle, almost enough for 3 month supply and they looked exactly like my good pill and did not smell. I hope they will be the same. This is the Lot No. M330C19-4; Exp. 9/20. She wondered why they have not been notified by the FDA.

Some Lot-Numbers are noted more often than others:

.. but still missing many LOT-Numbers in the mails.

I have an original bottle of 100 for 120mg………..manufacturer stamp is exp 9/20……….the lot number has a “K” in it (rather than the F you have above). These are PERFECT tablets in every sense…….smell, taste, and potency and have been taking these for the last few months. No specks.
I have an original bottle of 100 for 60mg………manufacturer stamp is exp 2/21. The lot number has a “C” in it. These tablets look tan, smell normal, and I will be starting them soon but have not started them yet. I did do a taste test on one (because of this blog) and it tasted normal but did not ingest yet. No specks.
Focusing on lot numbers can tell you if some batches are sub-potent and some are good.
However, focusing on manufacturers exp dates can tell us WHEN the bigger pills with specks first showed up for each strength. That said………….I am NOT convinced that there is a permanent change to speckled tablets since my GOOD 60mg have a 2/21 exp and I have NOT heard of a newer exp than 2/21 out there……..for instance I have NOT heard anyone talk about 3/21, 4/21, or 5/21 mfg exp dates.

I spoke with Joan at FDA in Silver Spring, MD to see what actions can be taken to have this investigated.
Please understand that by reporting this to the FDA, we can be opening a Pandora’s Box of what you wouldn’t want. Not saying it will happen, but it could. Why? NDT is NOT an approved drug. Stupid, but it’s not. Granted, the FDA does seem quite aware of the sales and seems to regulate it somewhat. But all these complaints could backfire and NDT removed totally from the market for idiotic reasons. It’s a ‘risk” and everyone needs to understand that.

Well, I did not know that. What a catch 22! So, that means these companies can escape liability knowing exactly what you’re stating? That we fear them being dissolved and leaving us with no choice but to switch to synthetic thyroid? I’m literally dependent on thyroid medicine to keep me alive as I have no thyroid. There has to be some recourse! I’m seeing where people are saying that they are literally having allergic reactions to the medicine. Let’s not forget the Hippocratic Oath here. No-one in this forum has a clue as to exactly what’s in these batches that is making us sick. That within itself is quite scary. Two years ago I underwent a 7&1/2 hour heart surgery for A-Fib…which started after I continued taking the reformulated Erfa Thyroid. Now I’m wondering if the same thing will happen to me again or to someone else with the NP thyroid. All due respect, but there has to be some accountability here!
We all need to understand its our choice to take this non-FDA drug. Natural thyroid was grandfatherd in for leagal sale before FDA existed 110 years ago. But never was approved, and NEVER will be. FDA HAS SHUT DOWN at least two manufactures of NDT in 2009. As far as they are concerned synthetic thyroid works for everyone, and thats good enough. If we have no NDT left, then what will we do? Complain to FDA…they wont care at ALL, they DONT want ANY NDT!! Recouse? – take synthetic then. Thats the options. On the bright side, maybe a another new NDT could come along again from this after math- that is why and how NP came about around 8 years or so ago.
China bought the Largest U.S. pork producer, Smithfield about 4 or 5 yrs. ago! Maybe we are getting pork parts for drugs from them. It sounds to me like the glands are rotten when they get to the Rx manufacturer! It could explain the smell and sick feeling.

If we want to switch to compounded meds, where can I find the conversion information? I’m taking a combination of NDT and T3. My daughter takes NDT only….I’m super worried about this affecting her. 🙁

Myself and my son have taken NP
Thyroid for the last two years with excellent results. I take a total of 145mg’s daily in divided doses (one 90mg tablet, one 30mg tablet, and one 15mg tablet) and son takes a total of 75mg’s daily (one 60mg tablet, and one 15mg tablet).
We were on Erfa’s Thyroid for years, and once they reformulated it, we had return of symptoms. Therefore switched to NP. All labs were good and we felt great. Then I went to Refill my 90mgs a couple weeks ago. We take the medication sublingually, so we are familiar with the game-y taste. Well, not this batch of 90 mg’s (lot M331G19-1 Exp12/31/20). To me, it has a petrochemical smell to it and it tastes like rotten onion/garlic. I thought, maybe this is just me…as I had just cooked something for my son that contained onion. But after taking it a couple more times I realized it wasn’t just me…it was indeed the medication. I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and had my thyroid removed 10 years ago, I’m also extremely chemically sensitive. I’m dependent upon thyroid medicine for my life and I can tell you that after taking this medicine for a handful of days that I am definitely regressing into hypo mode and that I am having chemical reaction to this medicine. At first I just thought…I’m not feeling right, I may be coming down with the flu. Just having bouts of G.I. issues along with my joints and bones feeling achy, headache and just general lack of energy. Then it hit me, as I was dreading taking this medication again this morning, I wondered if there was an issue, so I looked on my trusted STTM website, and sure enough, here we are with yet another natural desiccated thyroid disaster. We get our NP Thyroid medication from Costco in Newport News, Virginia and have been getting it from them for the last two years, with no issues. Well, today, I had to jump through hoops to get them to give me the lot number to the last batch that they filled for us. To add insult to injury, my husband just started 30 mg for slightly under-active thyroid that he was just diagnosed with in the past month. One of the lot numbers they gave me for the 30 mg (M329E19-1 Exp. 10-20-20) “may or may not†be what they gave to my husband, as they don’t keep track of lot numbers when filling medications. (Hubby reports he’s yet to feel better since he started taking the 30 mg’s for the past month). I am seeing it matches the lot number that people are reporting having negative reactions to. Really not too sure where to go at this point other than to reach out to FDA and few of the 90mg that I have to get them tested. I am in a slight panic, because we are reliant on this medication daily and are all taking varied strengths. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before all we can find is the reformulated tablets.
One familiarity I will note with both Erfa AND NP, is the telltale “specks†in the reformulated pills. Seems quite alarming that once those “specks†appear in the pills, we all report a change in our health tanking and hypothyroid symptoms swiftly returning! I know Acella is saying that nothing has changed, but, IMO, that’s total BS! Exact same song and dance with Erfa. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck…guess what?? It’s a DUCK. Such a shame!

Just started my new batch. They have a very different, horrible smell and taste and are taller, greyer and more speckled pills than previous bottles of 120 mg NP Thyroid. Exp. 8/2020. Picked up in early August from Walmart Neighborhood Market in Melbourne, Florida.
All my phone calls to Acella have been going to voice mail.
Where did you obtain your 8/2020 expiration date? Was it:
1) Typed onto your prescription bottle by your pharmacist? OR
2) Did you receive the original manufacturer’s 100 count bottle and you saw the manufacturer’s actual stamp on it. By peeling back your pharmacists labels or otherwise. OR
3) Did you call or ask your pharmacist for the exp date?
I fall into category 2 above………..and have an actual manf bottle of 100 for the 120mg and the manf stamped it 9/2020. And my 9/2020 bottle is excellent with no specs or smell or other problems.
My guess is that your pharmacist typed on the label 8/2020 which is one year after you picked it up at the pharmacy in 8/2019. However, I would like to know your opinion on this matter either way.

Email them and tell them about your issues, I did and they called me from the medical department and took a bunch of info. They are sending me an envelope to send them a few of my pills to analyze.
Niko lol, we’re just wasting our time doing that! I did the same thing well over a week ago (reported all my info to someone over the phone in Massachusetts.) Was promised new pills/an envelope to send the bad ones in, same as you. Have not received anything! Seems like a dead-end/easy way to gather information about us, nothing more. Good luck, though
I started a new script from Costco in Newark, DE on July 23 and immediately noticed a difference for the worse in how I felt from the Np Thyroid I had been taking the last 15 months. The Lot # is M327H18-1 and the expiration date is July 20, 2020. I did not notice a big difference in smell but the color of the tablets appeared whiter. I take the 15 mg tablets.
TWO NEW LOT NUMBERS!
1. They smell odd and the color is darker. I took the 30 mgs for a week and had a huge return of symptoms both physical and psychological. I had a few old pills left, went back to them and within days, symptoms began to subside. Noticed the smell, compared the new bottle of 60s with the old bottle. Definitely not the same. Both the new bottle of 30s and the new bottle of 60s smell the same, wrong.

Picked these up approximately 14 days ago. They are white, thicker and a tad chalky. There was virtually no smell, but it has developed the regular odor. I contacted Acella and got a phone message from a rep who wanted to assure me that even though they may look different, nothing has changed (huh? By virtue of the fact they are thicker, something has changed). He said the strengths are the same.
I can tell you my personal strength is not the same. I’m tired, have been dozing in the afternoon and feel like I’m gaining a pound a day. Everything was optimal before this. My next drs appointment is 10/17/19 and I’m not sure I can wait that long. I really hate to go to Armour because my insurance does not cover NDT and the NP was $145.00. NP was so great and their website touts “take a break from reformulations†or similar, shall we say hogwash, that is now false advertising.
Forgot to mention these are 30 mg. See…brain fog.

That is called a snow job. The smell has been horrid, being described as smelling like kitty litter, cat pee, ammonia. In all the years we’ve been taking NDT, it has never, ever, ever smelled as bad as that. And then there comes all the terrible symptoms patients have reported all across the board since starting the changed pills. So why weren’t those mentioned???
1. My levels were optimal right before I got my new bottles. My iron and adrenals were good also. I am now having hair loss, fatigue so bad I can hardly get out of bed, yet I can’t sleep at night. The texture and taste are different. I am having heart palpitations, which I always get when my thyroid is off. My extremely dry mouth and dry skin is also back and since I started taking these new pills I have been itching all over, so bad that I am covered in bruises from itching.

I just started the new pills and within 15 minutes had stomach pain. I waited an hour to eat something and I’m still nauseous and have an upset stomach and now a dull headache and diarrhea. I spoke to David at Acella yesterday who was very nice to speak with. He advised there were no changes to the medication. However, due to high demand they had to open new facilities to manufacture them. He asked me to send a few samples and I will when I get his mailer
. I cannot take these and will be looking around for a pharmacy that has the old supply.

Just opened them and started to consume (they tasted bad and smelt disgusting) after 2 weeks I felt so sick. Decided to read your blog and bingo. These pills are thicker, like the photos show, and they have the brown specks. They did Not have a very bad smell. However. These have a gravel or chalky type feel when chewed, instead of smooth and slightly sweet. Unfortunately, they taste like an extremely well used piece of cat litter. Felt like I was having an allergic reaction to something, but it could have just been that I couldn’t get rid of the taste.

I need to make a correction to the Lot # that I submitted on September 4th for the changed tablets. It is M331E19-1, not M331B19-1. It was very hard to read as Walgreens had stuck their pharmacy label over that information on the Acella stock bottle and it damaged the numbers when I pulled it away to read it. Under a very bright light and with mirror image, I was able to determine the number better.

Vanessa I have also experienced the same symptoms.it has been four weeks being off it and still sick.i for none did report to the FDA and have an ongoing case.my levels are real hypo along with the horrible side effects. I am trying tirosint sol but it is not going well.my stomach was burnt pretty bad from np. This is just horrible for us.

For the lot # you should call to your pharmacy. My pharmacy said they are not aware about any changes on the NP thyroid, but we know something is going on. If you know the lot# at least you will now if you have the bad ones. I hoe it helps.

I know the pills are changed from the original because they are visibly different, and much harder. They don’t disolve as easily, and won’t work sublingually.
30mg tabs — I don’t have the lot number or expiration date, as they were dispensed in a pharmacy bottle, not the original packaging.
I picked up my prescription at Wallgreens in Chicago, IL in June 2019 and have noticed a return of allergic-like symptoms that I had previously experienced on Armour, especially loud ringing in ears after dose.
The pharmacy can give you that information. i just called Walmart and they gave me the info for scripts they filled in June.
Another lot #: M331G19-1. These are now causing an allergic-like reaction. I had to take loratadine with the
pill this morning, just to stop the swelling in my throat and ears, and the nausea. By the way, the Acella rep. said
he would call Walgreens here, but did not.
Since we now have lot numbers and expiration dates, couldn’t we have a reputable lab analyze them for potency and any potential red flag ingredients? I would be happy to chip in to get to the bottom of this problem that is impacting so many of us.

I have this lot number. It includes both pills. Been taking since end of July and have felt so awful. Finally asked to change my script and then I came home and read this.

On August 28, 2019, I got my NP Thyroid prescription partially filled. I asked the pharmacist to look at them with me before taking them home.
The 30mg tablets were all clearly changed, and I did not buy them. They were grayish-tan with speckles, were thicker and had a strong chemical smell. The lot #: M329C19-2 ; the expiration date on the manufacturer’s bottle is Feb. 2021.
The 60mg tablets were a mix of the larger, speckled tablets and some that looked like the good older ones. The pharmacist separated the good from the bad, and I went home with only 33 tan 60 mg. tablets. I compared them with my remaining good, older tablets at home and noted that the new batch was whiter and odorless. I took one the next morning and had a bad reaction: a headache, pressure behind my eyes, and an inability to think clearly and read with comprehension. I also had a weird feeling in the back of my throat which I’ve only ever experienced when taking synthetic t3. I called the pharmacist for the lot number today, and he said it was M330L18-1. The expiration date on the manufacturer’s bottle was 10/2020. I think the bottle he had was for the speckled tablets not the white one I took.

Are you aware that there are now TWO manufacturers of drug called NP Thyroid? Acella and another company called Avkare out of Tennessee. Google image search Avkare and you can see the product label. This may explain the inconsistencies. Pharmacies may be filling Acella’s NP Thyroid with Avkare’s version. Just a thought…..
Avkare is the kind of company that will be hired by another pharmaceutical.
These are the two NP Thyroid prescriptions, one by Avkare and Acella. This might be the answer to why some are receiving the wrong thyroid. The picture online shows both, but they are different colors.

So far I have not gotten a bad batch. My doctor’s prescription states “Acella Thyroid and no substitutions”. And when I get the pharmacy’s orange bottle, it always says “Acella”.
If a prescription says NP Thyroid, the distributor could send it from either company. Just a thought how this mixup might have happened.

Regarding Expiration dates:
It is my understanding that the Expiration Date is TWO years after the manufacture date.
The list of expiration dates above is almost all 2020 and that means that these tablets on the list above have been on the market since 2018.
Thus, there may be a NEW problem but the 2020 expiration’s were manufactured in 2018 so they should NOT be part of a NEW problem.
What is the expiration date of the speckled tablets? My most recent are 60mg with exp 2/21 with NO speckels and NO smell. Which means they were manufactured in 2/19.
In my experience, pharmacists will put a “Use By” date on the pill bottle of one year from the date of the prescription. Maybe some people are thinking that is the expiration date. I have lived in 4 different states and I have never gotten a pill bottle that had the manufacturer’s expiration date on the label. Therefore pills that supposedly “expire” in 2020 were not necessarily made in 2018.
The manufacturer ships either 1,000 or 100 count bottles sealed from the factory to your pharmacy. These manufacturer’s bottles have expiration dates two years from the manufacture date stamped on them. The pharmacist then puts the tablets into their prescription bottle and does NOT usually put the expiration that was on the manufacturer’s bottle.
For purposes of this blog, it is my understanding we are talking about the expiration date on the manufacturers 1000 or 100 count bottles rather than what is on the prescription bottles.
It appears to me based on the list of the expiration dates above being mostly in 2020, that some not so great batches were made in 2018. And I have been taking NP for 2 years now and have had some mostly GREAT batches but also a few batches from 1.5 years ago that gave me gastric issues for a while but I finished the bottle and did okay. Overall, this is a GREAT product.
If you do a google search and look at some “reviews” from the past 5 years…………you will see “some” people saying that they had a “smelly” or “fishy” batch of NP 2 or 3 years ago.
My CONCERN is how are the batches manufactured over the last few months doing…………..and these would have exp of 2/21, 3/21, 4/21, 5/21, 6/21, 7/21 since they would have been manufactured in Feb to July of 2019. However, this thread is talking about way older batches than this since they have exp in 2020. Do these ALL have speckels (2/21 to 7/21 Exp)? Do these ALL have the bad smell OR do they have ZERO smell (which is a concern also) (2/21 to 7/21 Exp)?

What I noticed first was that I went from optimal in my April labs, and feeling good, to not feeling as well and my numbers going down in my July labs. By end of August my hypo symptoms slowly returning (most especially body aches and fatigue), I refilled my 30mg NP Thyroid prescription and noticed a terrible smell. I feel like the color is off as well, but I have no earlier ones to compare it to. I had my labs done just after that, and I am clearly hypo again. Just talked to pharmacist at Walgreens in Newton MA (Washington St location), and she is getting feedback from corporate Walgreens that there are complaints coming in about NP Thyroid. She gave me the lot number #M329C19-2 with expiration date 02/2021 from my last refill. She says I am her only customer, but asked me to report this to Acella and to please inform her of any other lot numbers I am seeing reported on STTM so that she can watch for them as well.

I received a new refill today, NP thyroid 30mg, the smell is different but for me it is weaker than the old ones. the new ones don’t smell like pigs, NDT, it is a weird smell. The color of the tablets is clearly different, the new ones are greyish and has speckles as many people has already reported. I put the tablets side by side and the difference between them is clear, old ones are clear (light beige, tan) the new ones are darker, greyish. I didn’t check the size because I didn’t think it was necessary.

Early summer is when I noticed a change and I’ve been receiving changed pills ever since. The pills are now a bit thicker and slightly speckled. They didn’t have a smell before, but now they do. I would not describe it as urine like others have. It might be a nutty smell or a lard smell, hard to describe. Although I’ve been on my current dose for a long time, I would not say it’s optimal. Hypo symptoms have always fluctuated. I have not detected any major difference in symptoms since the pill change; symptoms still fluctuate.

Not sure you are on the changed pill. What you describe can happen from being underdosed even on the former good pill. an you describe what the pill looks like.

The new pills spell like cat pee, the tablets are now speckled and the new tablets do not dissolve under my tongue and when I try to get them to dissolve under my tongue they make a dry spot in my mouth. I can not get rid of the taste it lingers forever. I feel like it makes my breath smell that way too. After one week on the new pills I started feeling tired in the afternoon, body freezing and achy, brain fog. Also I have been tracking my body temperature daily. Prior to taking the new pills I was hovering in the 98’s now my body temperature fluctuates from 96 to 97 degrees.

1. I picked up the changed tablets of NP Thyroid on Thursday, 8-29-19. I have no thyroid. Been on NP Thyroid for a year. On 8-30-19 I took the new tablets and not only do they have a strong ammonia smell, look different and taste terrible (not like normal NDT). I immediately started going hypothyroid and they burned my mouth and alimentary canal which made me extremely sick and in serious pain.

Got 60 mg tablets of NP thyroid on July 11th. They smelled terrible, told by pharmacist that could be normal, so took them. All hypo symptoms returned. Got 120 mg replacements on Aug 25th but still tired and weak. Used Costco pharmacy in Reno NV. Have no lot number. Expires 11/20.
Have been on my dose for over 6 months…last Lab numbers were improving as of July 27.

90 mg NP Thyroid expiration date 08/19/2020 no lot number on bottle or paperwork. Does not have the same odor as 60 mg. Does not have the same taste as the 60 mg.
1. 90 mg. The taste was like something rotten (rotten onion smell, to me) Began to feel
fatigued after about a week; eyelids swelled up; cold (it is still very hot here in NM); no appetite;
and very sick to my stomach about 1/2 hour after ingesting. I had a few of the last
Rx of normal ones left, and took one of those yesterday–and felt good all day long!

1.They smell nasty, I agree with many people that they smell like cat urine. They look different, are grayer than the last bottle I had. The taste is really different, unpleasant. 90 mg

Dawn the NP you mentioned 15 mgs. Lot # M327E19-1 is what my pharmacist is sending me from the same lot # M327E19-1. I asked my pharmacist to please open it up to check if it smells or has a different color other than white or if it has grey specs on it . My pharmacist who is also very concerned and cares for his customers checked and said that it has no smell the color is white and has no grey specs . However I was dosing with another lot # that I don’t have the lot # on it and what I noticed of late is that my voice is raspy now and my throat feels a bit tight . I don’t know what to make of it ?
I use 60mg & 15mg. The 15 was special order and it stinks different & worse than 60. I just thought I was feeling worse because I was told I have Hashimotos. Both expire 6- 2020. Got mine at West 2nd Albertsons in Roswell, NM.
1. They smell like insecticide and/or cat pee. Look noticeably different; old ones yellow-ish & smooth with no specks, new ones I got are speckled gray-ish, & much thicker also. I have mixed prescriptions with both new & old tablets in them

1. They smell foul, not just like pig but like dead animal. Both are lighter colored (which is different from most of you) and are speckled. I foolishly mixed the new in with a few leftover old ones and I can’t tell them apart visually. Felt terrible after taking them for about 7-10 days.

I received a sealed bottle of one hundred 30 mg pills of NP thyroid today. They were greyish tan and slightly thicker on inspection and visual comparison to old pills. I have decided not to risk even taking them.
I have and lot of 90 mg pills that I got very sick from. I will try to find information on them and post.
