All about Drug Recalls and what happened to Westminster’s Natural Desiccated Thyroid

Probably most people have heard about “drug recalls”, but may not know the ins and outs about recalls.

What is a recall?

I personally think the best definition of a drug recall comes from the Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary1:  a voluntary action of removing a product from retail or distribution by a manufacturer or distributor to protect the public from products that may cause health problems.”

Note the word “may” cause. Recalls can also be about risk, not just about definite adverse consequences.

So a recall is voluntary by a pharmaceutical?

It definitely can be. And it can also be at the request of the FDA.  Either.  From the FDA2: Drug recalls may be conducted on a company’s own initiative or by FDA request. FDA’s role in a recall is to oversee a company’s strategy, assess the adequacy of the recall and classify the recall.

What are reasons for a recall?

WebMD3 defines five potential reasons:

1) it’s a hazard to your health
2) it’s mislabeled or poorly packaged
3) it’s potentially contaminated during production or distribution
4) it’s not what it says it is
5) It’s poorly made, effecting it’s quality, purity, and/or potency

For #3 above, note that the potential contamination may be harmful OR non-harmful.

Are recalls common?

Believe it or not, yes! A 2017 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association4 stated that 1/3 of all prescription meds have been recalled due to “safety events”.

If something I take has a recall, what do I do? Can I get my money back?

Yes. But you do need to call the pharmacy from which you got it, first. They have to get official notification of the recall before giving that refund.

Shouldn’t I get a replacement for my prescription medication before taking it back?

Call your doctor so he or she can prescribe a different one before you return your recalled medication. That way, you can pick it up at the same time you return your recalled medication, say experts.

Now let’s move to a recent recall of one particular natural desiccated thyroid medication by Westminster Pharmaceuticals.

Westminster came out with its own natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) product, considered a generic version, in late 2017.  You can read more about their NDT product on Stop the Thyroid Madness’s page which lists brands and ingredients, here.

Westminster voluntarily issued a recall of their NDT in August 2018 due to “risk of adulteration”. See below.

Why did Westminster voluntarily issue a recall?

The recall states it was done “as a precaution because they were manufactured using active pharmaceutical ingredients that were sourced prior to the FDA’s Import Alert of Sichuan Friendly Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which as a result of a 2017 inspection were found to have deficiencies with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). Substandard cGMP practices could represent the possibility of risk being introduced into the manufacturing process.”

It’s important to point out the words “possibility of risk”. That is different than a definite negative outcome as having occurred. But time will tell.

And if you really want to get into detail about why the FDA issued an alert about Sishuan Friendly Pharmaceutical, the maker of desiccated thyroid powder that Westminster was using, it’s all here.

How do I know if my particular bottle of Westminster’s NDT is part of this recall?

The recall notice lists many lots. You’ll need to call your pharmacist to see which lot your bottle came from. But it does appear that most of Westminster’s NDT has been recalled by the long list of lot numbers.

Has anyone been harmed by their use of Westminster’s NDT?

In the 2009 recall wording, it was stated “To date, Westminster Pharmaceuticals has not received any reports of adverse events related to this product.”

Is this the first time that any thyroid medication has been recalled?

Nope. For example, Levoxyl, a T4-only medication, was recalled in April 2013.  Synthroid, another T4-only medication, has been recalled numerous times due to issues like subpotency and the same failure to follow good manufacturing practices.

Is 2018 a year of Natural Desiccated Thyroid mishaps??

Boy oh boy, it sure has been.

First, RLC’s Naturethroid and WP Thyroid ceased production in 2017, and Naturethroid only started creeping back in 2018. But sadly in 2018, there seem to be quite a few patients reporting it to be far weaker than it used to be and finding that out the hard way with the return of major hypothyroid symptoms. Some are trying to raise it to see if they can regain their former feel-goods; others have been switching to other brands.

Then comes this with Westminster’s NDT. What a mess.

Is there a conspiracy at foot to take our NDT away?

No, it does not appear to be conspiracy.

My doctor claims these recent issues prove that desiccated thyroid is unreliable and I should use Synthroid. What do I say?

You say “What is proven by millions over the years is that T4-only like Synthroid is the unreliable way to treat hypothyroidism”.

So where do I turn now?

People have been moving over to NP Thyroid by Acella, or Armour. You can also choose to have your NDT compounded. Or move to synthetic T3 with synthetic T4. But the goals are the same, which for years includes seeking a free T3 towards the top part of the range, and a free T4 midrange. Both. And to achieve the latter, it’s still important to have the right amount of cortisol and iron, we’ve learned repeatedly, because if you don’t, you can see problems. Too often, people blame their problems on NDT, when in reality, it’s what NDT or T3 reveals that is the problem.

TV personality Dr. “Drew” Pinsky is SORELY misinformed about desiccated thyroid!

YOU GOT IT WRONG DR. DREW!Note: though this STTM blog post will be mentioning a US presidential candidate, we will NOT approve comments that make political comments in any form.  We DO invite you to comment about the problem of medical professionals like Dr. Drew Pinsky being completely ignorant about the efficacy of Natural Desiccated Thyroid! SPEAK YOUR MIND!!

Recently, Dr. David Andrew “Drew” Pinsky (also known in the media as Dr. Drew) while being interviewed on KABC’s “McIntyre in the Morning,” made a ridiculously misinformed comment about the fact that Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is on natural desiccated thyroid to treat her thyroid condition.1

The Washington Times stated that Dr. Drew and another doctor came to some “startling conclusions“ and were “gravely concerned“. The Times quoted Dr. Drew as saying

“Both of us concluded that if we were providing the care that she was receiving, we’d be ashamed to show up in a doctor’s lounge. We’d be laughed out,” he added. “She’s receiving sort-of 1950-level care by our evaluation.”

The article narrowed it down with this quote from Dr. Drew:

“She also has hypothyroidism, and she’d been treated for hypothyroidism with something called Armour Thyroid, which is very unconventional and something that we used to use back in the ‘60s,” Dr. Drew said. “And by the way, wow, Armour Thyroid sometimes has some weird side effects.”

Here are SIX REASONS Dr. Pinsky is exactly the kind of doctor that informed thyroid patients report avoiding like the plague

1) To the contrary to what Dr. Drew stated, this so-called “unnconventional” medication from “back in the 60’s” was being used on thyroid patients starting in the 1890s…and was clearly successful for six DECADES as the primary treatment for hypothyroidism, and as medical reports reveal.

2) This so-called “unconventional medication” was only substituted with Synthroid starting in the 1960’s (which is synthetic and only ONE of FIVE thyroid hormones) because money-eyed Knoll Pharmaceuticals promoted it as a way to make moola….and doctors stupidly fell for it. See Chapter 1 and 2 in the revised STTM book for verified history about the introduction of Synthroid followed by the successful use of NDT for decades.

3) The “conventional medication” of using only one of five thyroid hormones (aka Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothyroxine, etc) has caused a multitude of problems for thyroid patients for over 50 years, as they have reported. The body does NOT force us to live for a storage hormone alone. Read //www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/t4-only-meds-dont-work  i.e. the use of Synthroid, Levoxyl and Levothyroxine has been the treatment producing “grave concerns” for too many patients.

4) Natural Desiccated Thyroid has changed lives ten-fold, report patients who started back on it around the turn of the 21st century! The results have been clearly superior to T4-only for all-too-many thyroid patients. Read //www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/natural-thyroid-101

5) Any “weird side effects” from Natural Desiccated Thyroid has explainable and correctible reasons for most of us, ranging from misinformed doctors using the lousy TSH lab test to dose by, to keeping patients on low doses far too long, to the fact that NDT will reveal either inadequate iron levels or cortisol issue (the latter two which by the way, Dr. Drew, are due to the lousy and inadequate treatment with T4-only for most). Study this: //www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ndt-doesnt-work-for-me

6) As far as Dr. Drew’s comment about being laughed out of the doctors lounge….that is exactly why informed patients are disgusted with, have so little respect for, feel immense frustration by, and run as fast as they can from doctors who would do that.

All of YOU are the reason we are yelling “Stop the Thyroid Madness!”

Thyroid patients worldwide are sick and tired of the robotic way medical practitioners worship the TSH lab test, the complete and biased ignorance many have about Natural Desiccated Thyroid or even T3 in one’s treatment, the blindness to obvious clinical symptoms of a poor treatment with T4, and the failure to understand how a healthy thyroid works and why!

It’s NOT about a “conventional” storage hormone alone any more than it’s simply about a pituitary hormone!

To Doctors: LISTEN TO THYROID PATIENTS! OPEN YOUR MINDS!

We are not brainless little peons who walk into your offices: we do live in our own bodies and thus have some wisdom about what works and what does NOT; we DO know that our lives have changed thanks to Natural Desiccated Thyroid and going by the free T3 and free T4, NOT the TSH. //www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/things-we-have-learned

Thyroid Patients and their Doctors: all the information you need

DoctorI’m so glad I wasn’t yet into hypothyroidism when I was a child. I had a doctor named Dr. Roach. Yes. Really. And he was quite tall and very serious. Not the kind of guy who should have been a pediatrician. So when my mother took me into the office for my required childhood vaccinations, I was SCARED…TO…DEATH…of him. I would hide behind the chairs as if I could really escape this nightmare. It didn’t work…lol.

So IF I had to see Dr. very-tall-very-serious-Roach for hypothyroidism, I shudder to think how it would have gone. lol.

INEFFECTIVE DOCTORS

As adults, we have somewhat more choices on who we see. And even so, it’s not always an easy issue. Thyroid patients report far too many doctors who they feel are missing the mark in their thyroid disease treatment.

And I get that!! When I was on Synthroid and later Levoxyl and suffering miserably, I remember going to at LEAST 20 doctors over those years, trying desperately to get help for what was debilitating me…and failing!

And boy oh boy, are there some bad memories. One doctor decided to use me for his “experiments” and I was put on a medication which really had nothing to do with what I went in there for. In retrospect, I think he was using me for a medical article he wanted to write, which he did then and still does today.

Another doctor put his foot down in arrogance when I asked if I could please get my potassium, sodium and magnesium tested to see why I was getting blood pressure problems. “That’s not your problem”, he swiftly said. i.e. he came across as “I’m the doctor; you are not. Don’t ask for anything”.

And there were many doctors who, in light of my hypothyroid-caused depression due to being inadequately treated thanks to T4-only, told me I need to see a psychologist or get on anti-depressants. NOT the right answer when natural desiccated thyroid would have ended that depression!

Yes, I finally found a couple of medical professionals who have been wonderful! And that’s because they have started listening to our experiences, and are willing to learn from me, as well.

A better direction

Today, patients have a lot more help and a sense of proactivity in their treatment thanks to the education and support that Stop the Thyroid Madness offers. Here are pages related to doctors that may help:

  • TAKE A SURVEY as to your experiences with the majority of your doctors over the years. This will become important information which STTM will use in the future. Please contribute by answering the five questions!
  • Here’s where you can see how patients find a good doctor. It can take a little work, but the end results will be much better.
  • Don’t know how to say things to your doctor? Here’s a letter to your doctor which can help.
  • And of course, YOU need to become informed somewhat ahead of time, because there will probably be some areas you’ll need to guide your doctor about. Here’s a summary of what patients have learned.
  • Also helpful is to take a copy of the revised STTM book with you. You can have it bookmarked and read to open, if needed, in the discussion with your doctor.
  • What if your doctor is the kind that needs research proof? STTM has a medical research page you can print out and hand to him.
  • And to make you feel empowered, here is a page which outlines the areas doctors need to change in their thinking.
  • Finally, get support from patients.

Bottom line about working with your doctor

Yes, thyroid patients may be disgusted and angry about the lack of good care they’ve received, but it still helps to to interact respectfully and tactfully. And definitely be INFORMED. That will give you the edge and your doctor’s respect in return. If not, move on to much better doctor! Be our OWN best advocate!

Thyroid treatment success stories–read Erin’s story about T4-only problems and moving to NDT!!

peopleI love real life stories!

In fact, I think those kind of testimonies are some of the most influential ways to help others. And Erin’s story below really struck me. She spent years ignoring the idea that her T4 treatment with Synthroid and later Levoxyl just might explain all the growing problems she was having. So she finally saw the light, made a change, and is feeling so much better as she finally is working on the right issues. Enjoy her story! And if you want to read more, they are on the Stories of Others page, which anyone is invited to contribute to!

HOW I MISREAD MY CONTINUED SYMPTOMS WHILE ON T4-ONLY…THEN GOT WISE

by Erin

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis and post-partum depression after having my first baby at 23 years old.  I went to the doctor because I was so depressed and fatigued that I couldn’t get out of bed most days. I also had terrible headaches. My doctor put me on Prozac and Synthroid and I stayed on both for the next 23 years (also later used Levoxyl).

Continued problems

The Prozac did help me to be more functional; however, I still had periods of depression and fatigue, and developed other health problems as well, such as anemia, IBS, and chronic pain from TMJ.  I went back to my doctors seeking solutions, but they put me on new and different meds that didn’t help and actually caused worsening symptoms like sedation and dependence.  I was even diagnosed with bipolar at one point and on six different psych meds at one time!

I finally got off all the meds except the Levoxyl (which I had switched to from Synthroid)  and Prozac, and was able to go back to school and regain some functionality.  But I continued to struggle with chronic pain, periods of depression, fatigue, and digestive complaints.  My doctors periodically checked my TSH and told me I was optimally treated or raised my Levoxyl.  I didn’t question their testing or treatment methods, and did not connect my health problems with my hypothyroidism.

For many years, I just lived with the pain, discomfort, and fatigue.  I chalked it up to stress and aging.  But the IBS and fatigue got progressively worse until they were seriously interfering with my life.  I had bloating, constipation and pain that often kept me housebound.  I went to my doctor, and was told to change my diet, and take over-the-counter preparations for constipation.  He never suggested that my health problems could be related to my hypothyroidism.

My denial and my apathy

My mother, who began frequenting a particular thyroid website, told me that some people can not convert t4 to t3, that she was one of those people, and that I might be too. She encouraged me to go back to my doctor and ask him to test my t3 levels.  It seemed unlikely to me that my hypothyroidism was not being adequately treated! After all, I was getting my health care at a university medical center – a teaching institution.

My doctor ordered lab tests yearly and had not adjusted my Levoxyl for several years.  I think too I was just plain too exhausted to deal with it.  I barely had enough energy to get through work, let alone devote time to researching an alternative form of thyroid treatment that, in my mind, probably would not work anyway!  I think, too, the Prozac contributed to my failure to seek alternative modes of thyroid treatment by dulling the pain and keeping me apathetic.

The pain and discomfort of my IBS is what finally pushed me to take the first step to finding an alternative form of health care.  My husband had been insisting for a few years that I go to a naturopath or functional medicine doctor, but I didn’t want to pay out of pocket when I had medical insurance that I paid for each month.

My breakthrough, finally

Finally, I got on the internet and searched for a functional medicine doctor in my area, and found one not far from my house.  My new doctor, a naturopath, ordered comprehensive lab testing, which revealed that I had very low free t3 levels, severe anemia, low b12, low ferritin, high cholesterol, candida overgrowth, other digestive bacteria imbalances, and more!  He told me that my health problems were related to my hypothyroidism, which, he said, was not optimally treated on my current medications.  He advised me to reduce my Levoxyl and add .25 grain of Naturethroid each day.  He also recommended a variety of supplements.

When I first took the Naturethroid, I didn’t feel much. But about two weeks later I began to feel better than I had in years!  I could not believe how amazing I felt; it was like a miracle!  My IBS,  head and jaw pain went away, and I had feelings of well-being.  I was convinced natural desiccated thyroid was the solution to my health problems.

A bump in the road

About 10 days later, however, I started feeling anxious, restless, shaky, and having heart palpitations. I went back to my naturopath and he told me to stop the Naturethroid.  I felt intuitively this was incorrect.  I frantically searched the internet for some reason for my symptoms, and found STTM.  I learned that I couldn’t tolerate the Naturethroid because of my low iron and low cortisol.  I also felt empowered by what I learned on STTM; the site encouraged patients to make their own decisions about their healthcare.  After that, I took over management of my own health care.  I told my naturopath what I had discovered, and he agreed to adopt the treatment plan I felt was right from what I learned from STTM.  Fortunately, he was open-minded and has been willing to be my equal partner in my health care.

I learned from the STTM site, book and forums that recovering from years of untreated hypothyroidism from staying on T4 meds is more complicated than simply getting on NDT.  It takes a lot of work to stay informed, investigate, identify and treat the root causes of my health problems with natural remedies.  It is far easier to remain passive and allow my doctors to dictate my treatment. However, my apathy kept me sick for a long time, and I cannot afford to lose anymore time being sick!  Treating the root causes of my health problems is well worth it, as it leads to longer-lasting and better results than simply covering the symptoms with harmful pharmaceuticals.

Success and confidence for the future

While I still have work do to, I have come a long way and feel better than I have in years.  The progress I have achieved in recovering my health has made me confident that I will ultimately achieve optimal health with the tools I have learned on STTM.

A clinical trial in progress to investigate T3 in the treatment of fibromyalgia

Oh the heels of my last blog post (see right below this if you are reading right on the site) comes something VERY interesting, and which thyroid-patients-in-the-know have already known about for a good ten years!

Namely, Dr. Ian Carroll, MD, MS, and Dr. Jarred Younger, PhD of the Stanford Systems Neuroscience and Pain Lab are currently enrolling patients for a clinical trial investigating T3 for the treatment of fibromyalgia. (Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome which causes widespread musculoskeletal pain and debilitating fatigue, also aching, twitching, burn sensation, joint issues).

Of course, patients who switched to desiccated thyroid the past ten years (or have used synthetic T3 in their treatment) already KNOW the truth from experience (which is usually always pooh-poohed by clinical-trial-worshipping, clinical-presentation-ignoring, medical professionals.).

Namely, fibromyalgia is usually the result of undiagnosed hypothyroidism (due to the inane TSH lab test) and undertreated hypothyroidism (due to the worst medication ever thrust on patients, aka T4-only, or Synthroid, Levoxyl, levothyroxine, Eltroxin, Oroxine, etc.) i.e. you need direct T3, the most powerful thyroid hormone, to adequately treated hypothyroidism.

i.e. we’re all kinda going duhhhhhhhh here.

But, if a clinical trial is needed to prove what we already know (and so has Dr. John C. Lowe known it for many years), it’ll be just one more underscore of the truth. Go to the following to read more and/or enroll:  http://snapl.stanford.edu/t3/

Does your inner ear itch?? Got an email from a gal who was on Synthroid for 7 years, and for the last 5, had torturous deep inner ear itching. And guess what?? It went away just two days after switching to desiccated thyroid. Yup, another long and pathetic symptom of a poor treatment. (If you still have it on desiccated thyroid, see what mistakes in your treatment you need to identify and change, which is also Chapter 11 in the STTM book with a little more details added.)

Yippee!! Direct Labs is the third lab facility to partner with STTM in offering the kind of labs that patients who frequent STTM know are important in their quest to feel better and educate their doctors.  Unfortunately, they don’t offer saliva like the other two, which are Healthcheck USA and MyMedLab, but they have all the other labs you may be interested in. You can view them by going to STTM’s Recommended Labwork page.
